The Rochmon Record Club Listening Party is meant to inform and deepen our understanding of the history of the individual performers, the songs and the stories that made the featured album iconic.

Each month, on the 3rd Tuesday, beginning at 7pm, our host, Chuck Vosganian, will present a live multi-media presentation about a classic album or band.

3/17/20 Paul Simon – “Graceland”
Rochmon Record Club Listening Party, Paul Simon’s 7th solo album “Graceland” at Universal Preservation Hall, 25 Washington Street in Saratoga Springs. Released in 1986 “Graceland” features some of Simon’s most beloved songs and includes performances by over 40 musicians, 13 of them drummers. Songs like “Boy In The Bubble”, “Graceland”, “Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes”, “You Can Call Me Al”, and “Homeless” are framed as western music with an extremely heavy World Music feel. We’ll listen to Paul Simon’s “Graceland” on UPH’s state of the art sound system.

4/21/20 Led Zeppelin “IV”
Rochmon Record Club Listening Party, Led Zeppelin – “IV” at Universal Preservation Hall, 25 Washington Street in Saratoga Springs. After touring non-stop for 2 ½ years Led Zeppelin – Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham – retreated to the English countryside to focus on songwriting. The result was Led Zeppelin’s best-selling album and one of the best-selling records of all time. Reverting to the heavily blues influenced sound they developed on their first 2 albums and pushing the boundaries of what they could do musically, Zeppelin created a career defining, 8 song masterpiece which includes  the epic “Stairway to Heaven”, “Rock & Roll”, and every drummer’s dream song “Black Dog”. We’ll listen to Led Zeppelin “IV” on UPH’s state of the art sound system.

5/19/20 Bruce Springsteen “Darkness on the Edge of Town”
Rochmon Record Club Listening Party, Bruce Springsteen – “Darkness on the Edge of Town” at Universal Preservation Hall, 25 Washington Street in Saratoga Springs. Bruce Springsteen’s first three albums traced The Boss’s move from the swamps of Jersey to center stage all over the world. Springsteen’s 3rd album, “Born to Run”, saved Bruce’s career and asked big questions about putting away our past and coming to terms with the pressure of growing up. “Tramps like us!” Bruce was bound for mega stardom. “Darkness on the Edge of Town”, released 3 years later, asks the question “What do I do now?”. Bruce and his E Street Band made a great record of 10 hard rocking Bruce songs including “Adam Raised a Cain”, “Badlands”, “Prove It All Night”, and arguably one of the best car songs ever, “Racing in the Street”. We’ll listen to Bruce Springsteen’s “Darkness on the Edge of Town” on UPH’s state of the art sound system.

6/16/20 Stevie Wonder – “Greatest Hits” Retrospective Dance Party
Rochmon Record Club Listening and Dance Party, Stevie Wonder – “Greatest Hits” Retrospective at Universal Preservation Hall, 25 Washington Street in Saratoga Springs. Every year we kick off the summer in Saratoga Springs with a dance party. This year we dance and celebrate the music of the Motor City’s own Stevie Wonder with a “Greatest Hits” Retrospective! Beginning his career in 1963 Stevie charted 20 #1 singles and over 50 top 10 Singles. Over 57-years Stevie Wonder has won 25 Grammy Awards and the admiration of fellow musicians and fans all over the world. We’ll listen to Stevie Wonder from the breadth of his catalog including “Superstition”, “Uptight”, “For Once In My Life”, “Living In The City”, “You Are The Sunshine of My Life”, and, Teddy Foster’s theme song, “Boogie On Reggae Woman”. We’ll listen to Stevie Wonder’s “Greatest Hits” Retrospective on UPH’s state of the art sound system.

7/14/20 Chicago “Chicago II”
Rochmon Record Club Listening Party, Chicago – “Chicago II” at Universal Preservation Hall, 25 Washington Street in Saratoga Springs. Bands with horns! “Chicago II”, released in 1970, solidified the presence of Chicago on the radio for the next 50 Years. Produced by James Guercio, who’s vision of fusing the horns of Jazz and R&B with Rock was achieved with a band of consummate players. Filled with classic Chicago songs like “Make Me Smile”, “25 or 6 to 4” and the slow dance played at every prom in the ‘70’s, “Colour My World”, “Chicago II”, a double album is a tour deforce of a band on a mission to dominate their chosen style. No other horn band comes close to Chicago’s legacy and popularity. It started here. We’ll listen to Chicago’s “Chicago II” on UPH’s state of the art sound system.

8/18/20 Joe Cocker – “Mad Dogs and Englishmen”
Rochmon Record Club Listening Party, Joe Cocker – “Mad Dogs and Englishmen” at Universal Preservation Hall, 25 Washington Street in Saratoga Springs. The greatest live album ever recorded? Joe Cocker – “Mad Dogs and Englishmen”! Not even a question. Thrown together to meet Cocker’s contractual agreements, the band was drawn from the best touring and studio musicians available. “Mad Dogs and Englishmen” assembled, rehearsed and hit the road in 8 days. Lead by musical director, piano player and vocalist Leon Russell, the band is perfectly balanced on the head of a pin. “Mad Dogs and Englishmen” is filled with covers, from “Honky Tonk Women”, ”Feelin’ Alright”, “She Came In Through the Bathroom Window”, and the show stopping “The Letter”. Cocker’s voice, Russell’s inventive direction, and a band for the ages, create a concert to be listened to forever. We’ll listen to Joe Cocker’s “Mad Dogs and Englishmen” on UPH’s state of the art sound system.

9/15/20 No Doubt “Tragic Kingdom” Alyssa Show!
Rochmon Record Club Listening Party, No Doubt – “Tragic Kingdom” at Universal Preservation Hall, 25 Washington Street in Saratoga Springs. On September 15 Alyssa rocks UPH and takes the big chair to lead us through No Doubt’s 3rd album “Tragic Kingdom”. Released in 1995 “Tragic Kingdom” is the best-selling album of the Ska/Punk era played by a great band dramatically lead by Gwen Stefani. The 14 songs on “Tragic Kingdom” were recorded at 11 studios over 2 ½ years and include the songs, “Just a Girl”, “Spider Webs” and “Don’t Speak”. We’ll listen to No Doubt’s “Tragic Kingdom” on UPH’s state of the art sound system.

10/20/20 Beatles “White Album” Disc 1
Rochmon Record Club Listening Party, The Beatles – “White Album” at Universal Preservation Hall, 25 Washington Street in Saratoga Springs. In Rochmon World, October is “Rochtober” AND Beatles month! This year it’s Beatles week with 2 Listening Parties for The Beatle’s 9th album, the double LP, “The Beatles” aka “The White Album”. On Tuesday 10/20 we listen to the first disc, sides one & two, 17 tracks which include the classics “Back in the U.S.S.R.”, “Rocky Raccoon”, “Blackbird” and George Harrison’s epic “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”. Join us as we take a deep dive into the Giles Martin 2018, 50th-year Anniversary re-release! We’ll listen to The Beatles “White Album” on UPH’s state of the art sound system.

11/17/20 Elvis Costello and the Attractions “My Aim Is True”
Rochmon Record Club Listening Party, Elvis Costello and the Attractions – “My Aim is True” at Universal Preservation Hall, 25 Washington Street in Saratoga Springs. Seismic shift! That’s the only way to describe what happened when “My Aim is True” hit the turntable! The cover of “My Aim is True”, with Elvis’s classic Buddy Holly pose, is covered with “Elvis Is King” repeated over and over 100’s of times. One listen and there was no denying the King was dead, long live the King! With songs like “Welcome to the Working Week”, “Alison”, “(The Angels Want to Wear My) Red Shoes” and “Less Than Zero” Elvis Costello and The Attractions rocked our world.  Recorded over 11 days and produced by the great Nick Lowe, Elvis changed music forever. We’ll listen to Elvis Costello and the Attractions “My Aim is True” on UPH’s state of the art sound system.

12/15/20 Year End Retrospective TBD
Rochmon Record Club Listening Party, Year End Retrospective at Universal Preservation Hall, 25 Washington Street in Saratoga Springs. Join us for our annual, year-end, retrospective about a favorite artist who left the planet in 2020. We’ll take a deep dive into their music over the breadth of their career. Always fun, but melancholy, the December Year End Retrospective is a celebration of  an artist we love and a great way to pay tribute and say thank you! We’ll listen to the Year End Retrospective featuring “TBD” on UPH’s state of the art sound system.
